Put Your Energy Into Saving Energy This Christmas

I remember last Christmas day as if it was yesterday. Not for the elated pretence when I received a video cassette, for the sixth consecutive year, from my grandparents; nor for the fact my brother stated that it “had been really tough year” and hence why he’d brought me a padded toilet seat. I remember it vividly for the incredible amount of time my parents spent in the kitchen prepping, cooking and then serving an exorbitant festive feast to our family – and how much they complained about it.

So it’s my decision this year that something has to change and one of two things is going to happen: My parents either reluctantly keep out of the kitchen, watch the inevitable down pour of TV mediocrity and my brother and I will cook; or the gifts under the tree comprise of wonderful kitchen gadgets that not only prevent an apocalyptic ending to dinner, but also go towards saving time and energy. I’m more excited than Delia Smith delivering a half-time speech.

And so my search begins. If only I could call upon a battalion of Santa’s little helpers to make this search as efficient and fun as possible. Instead, on this occasion, like more that 20 million Christmas shoppers last year, I will use the internet.

The problem with gas and electricity (similar to the great bearded man himself, of course,) is you never actually see it. There is no visual clue as to how much we’re using, or more importantly wasting, so it only hits home when the bill arrives – particularly those prodigious January statements. Energy prices are on the rise, money is becoming tighter, and although spending money on consumer electronics seems like the last thing any sane person should do, the judicious purchase of cash-friendly gadgets can save us money in the long term.

”Investing in gadgets and appliances that save you money will also help protect the planet,” says Adam Vaughan, editor of the Green Guy. “Unlike most gadgets, modern kitchen appliances offer an easy way to save valuable time in the kitchen and reduce the amount of time we all spend in there. Gadgets that save or generate energy will also have a clear long term financial benefit.”

So, I now know that my parents will be helping the environment as well as themselves this year, which means I can take great pleasure in selecting their new devices.

I first stumble across an electric potato peeler. I know this will be well received as last year a staggering 100 spuds were presented on our table, probably a figure not far off from the Royal Navy’s. The amount of bread consumed (subsequent days ahead of turkey sandwiches) was alarming, so a bread maker will save money and create a wonderful lingering aroma around the house.

”It is a very common habit to preheat the oven before cooking, so just put food in straight away to save energy,” says the Energy Saving Trust. “Also, don’t keep opening the oven door. Every time you do so, your oven loses 20 degrees Celsius of heat.”

This has inspired me to purchase some hot plates and serving magnates, which will reduce cooking time on the big day. I also discovered table top heaters and ovens to alleviate the amount of food cooked at once. Less energy used and more food to be dispatched – surely one of the best things about Christmas!

One item that is a surprise entry on my Christmas gift-list this year is a steam generator iron. Let me explain why: Allegedly, my mother spent two hours from sunrise on Christmas morning ironing and grooming the multitude of table clothes, elaborately-embodied table mats and clothes ready for proceedings. This is certainly not the ideal way to start the day, so if these unnecessary obstacles can be ‘flattened’ out, then we can ‘press on’ with the celebrating and spending time together as a family!

So in order to achieve this harmonious sanctuary, I suggest you take a look at http://www.electricshopping.com – an online electrical haven of products that help you save money and reduce your carbon footprint. Shopping this Christmas doesn’t have to cost you the earth.

Hopefully I’ll be back next year with the news my presents made the desired impact and my parents still intend to cook for the masses for years to come. We’ll see.

Romancing Her This Christmas

As the holidays approach, it is going to be imperative that you offer your special girl a romantic Christmas. While the holidays can be naturally stressful for her this does not mean you cannot make it better for her. She will be sure to appreciate the gestures you make and will definitely be surprised if you are not normally a romantic kind of guy. The good new is, whether you are romantic or not, with these tips you will be able to give her a romantic holiday she will not soon forget.

Creating romantic moments are a breeze. You just need to use a little logic. The good news is that men are good at this most of the time, especially when they have the right help. If you want to surprise her this Christmas, by sweeping her off her feet, than you need to put some thought into things before you do anything.

For romantic purposes you have two options, both of which we will discuss in more detail. The first option is to shower her with presents. Since Christmas is approaching, this may be something you plan to do Christmas Day, but you could offer little presents or private presents to entice her until Christmas arrives. The next option involves offer your help instead of giving her presents.

Let’s start with the presents

The most important thing to do when buying a woman presents is to keep her ultimate needs in mind. For Christmas, you want to buy her something romantic that will show her that you love her. If you are buying something with yourself in mind, she will not feel the romantic gesture in that.

If she spends a lot of time devoted to work and family buy her things that will relax her and make her feel sexy. These do not have to be big presents. You might choose a sexy piece of lingerie you can both enjoy or you could choose something for private moments alone. Many women enjoy bubble baths so you could build a bubble bath gift basket.

If you wanted to build a gift basket like the one mentioned you could get an ordinary basket or a bag and fill it with bubble bath bubbles, bath salt, shampoo, body wash (her favorite scent), a bath sponge, and even a waterproof vibrator for some extra private and relaxing moments. For added romantic appeal add some candles and even some champagne then you can place a love letter into the basket with promises of bubble bath evenings for two.

The Non-Present Option

If you are looking for other ways to romance her this holiday season try making yourself useful. Christmas is the busiest time of year for many women. Knowing that you are ready and willing to help make her job easier is considered to be romantic by many women. Having a faithful errand boy or someone to help with the kids will be the best gift you could give her during the holidays.

Keep communication at an all time high during the holidays. Do not spring any surprises on her, invite guests without telling her, or sitting around asking for beer during one of the many holiday ball games this season. Additionally, you should attempt to communicate your feelings to her, as well. Nothing will relax her and keep her happier than hearing how thankful you are to have her in your life and how much she is appreciated. This will be the best gift she can receive this year. Of course, the presents and the romantic nights to follow will definitely be a close second.

How to be Politically Inept this Christmas

There, now it’s out there; the “C” word, Christmas. Somehow it’s become politically incorrect to wish others Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa or anything that suggests a belief system. Well, I’ve decided to forgo political correctness at the risk of being labeled “politically inept” this holiday season.

Be Different in December

I choose to celebrate in December because Christmas is in it. You may celebrate in December for a different reason. I not only respect but cherish that diversity among us. Yet that diversity is discounted and stripped away from us when the Politically Correct (P.C.) Police force all to be the same by restricting us to Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings. Can we Americans afford any more loss of our identities? Can we afford to lose the meanings behind our traditions, actions and feelings?

The advent and proliferation of social media encourage us to “live in the open.” Tools like LinkedIn, Facebook and YouTube enable us to share what makes us human. In theory, our humanity should make us more desirable as a business associate. When you defy the P.C. Police and offer a greeting with more flavor than Seasons Greetings, we learn you are a person of character and courage as well as spirited and thoughtful. Much is shared in less than 2 seconds!

Speak Your Peace of Mind

We’re entitled to all speak our own “language” of the season. Consider that, as an example, if one of us speaks Spanish, another French and the third Italian, none of us can be accused of being wrong. Background, upbringing and, sometimes, life choices enable each of us to express ourselves in a preferred way. I prefer to offer Merry Christmas because it has meaning in its language that I understand best and represents the best expression I’ve got to give. The P.C. Police stand ready to chastise us for choosing the “wrong” form of expression. I’m giving others a gift of my heartfelt wishes; Merry Christmas enables me to present those wishes with the clearest and strongest meaning I know. By watering the message down to Happy Holidays, I feel like I’m cheating you, giving you less than the best I have to offer.

I can accept that not everyone will be happy with my gift of Merry Christmas. Some will take offense, but that’s because they choose to be offended. They’re so concerned with their own selfish perspective of the way things ought to be, they can’t see my gift for what it is. Let’s face it; some people are looking for reasons to be offended.

Give Your Gift Any Way

You must be willing to get into trouble now and then if you’re ever going to be comfortable using your preferred greeting at every opportunity. When you occasionally find someone who takes exception, is offended and won’t accept your gift, don’t blame yourself for their problem. I refuse to walk on eggshells because someone might want to pick a fight over my choice of words. Saying Merry Christmas doesn’t mean I’m pushing religion; I don’t expect anyone will convert to Christianity because I offered them a Merry Christmas!

I encourage you to join The League of the Politically Inept and give your greeting gifts at every opportunity during December. I’m convinced most people appreciate it, and your encouragement emboldens them to do the same. When December is over the politically inept will have had a lot more fun than the politically correct. Don’t forget the reason you celebrate this season, and continue to be generous with your gift of your favorite greeting.

Make This Christmas Magical With a Visit From Santa’s Magic Elf

If you’ve ever visited Santa’s Workshop in the North Pole you’ll know that Santa has many elves helping him to prepare for Christmas. But I bet you didn’t know that not all of the elves stay in the workshop all year round. Each and every year Santa sends some of his magical elves on a special assignment. To visit the homes of little boys and girls the world over, to spend time in their homes and with their families, and to report back to Santa about their behaviour in the run up to Christmas.

Santa’s Elf is designed to make Christmas a magical one for your children. He’s the perfect interactive tradition for families and school classes. Do you have young children who would like a visit from Santa’s Magic Elf this Christmas? Then read on and find out how to bring a little Elf Magic into your home this holiday season.

This magical elf is very mischievous and gets himself into all manner of unlikely places as he carries out Santa’s investigations. Your kids will also want to take him to visit friends and classmates so he needs to be sturdy. If you are creative you could make your own Magic Elf using material scraps, other wise you can pick one up from a store.

Your Magic Elf will need a name, a letter from Santa explaining the reason for his visit and a small notebook or journal in which he will write his Elf Report. The premise here is that Father Christmas has sent this little elf to visit your family to report back to Father Christmas on the behaviour of your children. Santa will return to collect the Elf on Christmas Eve and if they have been good he will leave gifts before whisking the Elf home to the North Pole.

You’ll need to decide on the best time for him to arrive into your house. This could be during Thanksgiving, a couple of weeks before Christmas, or even on the day you put up the Christmas Tree. Choose a day that suits your family best. You might want to put the elf in a basket along with his letter and notebook, or hide him in the Christmas Tree. Use your imagination to introduce him to your kids with a little fan fare – he is an important guest after all!

Once the Elf is settled into your house he will need to spend the evenings carrying out his research, once the little ones are sound asleep you can hide him in cupboards or behind the sofa. Carrying out Santa’s investigations is tiring work and this little elf can be known to fall asleep on the job. The kids will have to search for him in the morning to find out where he fell asleep this time.

Oh and did I mention the Elf Mischief? Yes, he has a mischievous streak and is known to take all of the pots and pans out of the kitchen cupboards, hide the remote control for the television and leave candies in coat pockets — all while the kids are fast asleep!

Come December 24 your visiting elf will need to be packed and ready for his trip home to the North Pole. Make sure you bundle him up warm with his Elf Report and place him near the chimney or window so that he can let Santa into the house. Your children might want to send him home with a letter that they have written to Santa. They’ll probably want to tell him all about the mischief that the elf got up to, how much they enjoyed his visit, and of course extend an invitation for next Christmas!

One of the great benefits of the Christmas season is the wide variety of Christmas DVDs released to celebrate the season. There are new feature film DVDs released to provide family fun and entertainment and there are other DVDs released to help families get more out of the holiday season. One of this year’s best new Christmas DVDs is “Family Time with Santa.”

This multiple award winning countdown to Christmas DVD features twelve separate episodes for the entire family to watch. In addition to giving great learning lessons to children, the best part of this DVD is that it provides both entertainment and family fun time for the Christmas season. Each of the twelve episodes gives a six to nine minute nighttime activity for families to participate in together.

Each episode entertains with a depiction of fun activities presented by Santa, including: Firehouse, Taffy Factory, and a Boat Tale. While entertainment value is high, the major benefit of this collection is that it provides twelve nights of family fun and bonding. Children will enjoy the learning fun and Christmas cheer from Santa and his helpers, and parents will love the chance to expand Christmas into twelve nights of family time.

This great DVD collection has 15 different awards for Children’s Entertainment, Concept, Design Creativity and Originality, from various organizations. It is an extremely innovative way to countdown the days to Christmas.

The final days to Christmas are often an exciting and anxious time for young children. With the “Family Time with Santa” DVD, parents can give their children twelve nights of family fun and help ease some of the anxiety for Christmas morning, while at the same time building up the hopes and dreams of the little ones.

Another great benefit to parents with this DVD is that each episode begins by helping children go through their regular night time routines. Santa will help ease some of the pressure on parents during the busy Christmas season by ensuring that your children have completed their chores, brushed their teeth, and are ready for bed before he begins discussing that night’s hobby.

With all of the traditional Christmas options available to parents, very few offer the same great value gained from the “Family Time with Santa” DVD. Families will enjoy twelve exciting nights of Christmas fun with Santa and children will be blessed with lifetime memories with each night’s activities.
