Christmas Ornaments: New Ideas for Old Decorations

Most families have a collection of Christmas ornaments they display on their tree year after year. Often times, these ornaments are full of sentimental value. However, when you’ve been using the same ornaments for many years, they can also get a little boring. The important thing to remember is, you don’t have to part with your old ornaments in order to freshen up your tree. Hang onto those treasured items and find a new way to display them.
When getting ready to clean out an old collection of Christmas ornaments, the first step is to weed out any items that are worn or broken. Some things you may be able to repair easily, while others will need to be thrown away for safety reasons. Next, go through the remaining ornaments and decide what you want to keep. If there are ornaments you don’t want to keep, but also don’t want to donate to charity, consider handing them down to another family member. The gift of an old heirloom ornament might mean a lot to someone else in the family.
Now that you’ve got your old Christmas ornaments cleaned out and you’ve decided what to keep, the next step is figuring out how to display them. If you still want to display them on the main Christmas tree in your house, then consider ways to freshen up the look of your tree. If you currently use an artificial tree, you might want to consider getting a live Christmas tree this year, or perhaps just purchasing a new artificial one in a different size or color. Adding a new set of ornaments in coordinating (or differing) colors will spruce up the look of the tree. You might also consider new lights. For example, if you’ve always used multi-colored lights in the past, try using plain white. You’ll probably find that your holiday ornaments stand out a lot more. You could also add some other types of decorations to your tree to make it feel new again. Consider adding strings of beads, tinsel, feathers, floral accents…the sky’s the limit! For a really unique and whimsical tree, you can add almost any item and it will simply add character to the tree and make it more interesting.
In some cases, you may not want to put your old ornaments back on your main Christmas tree. After all, you’ve been using them there for years, so why not come up with a totally new way to display them? One option is to purchase another, smaller tree that you set up in another part of the house, and use only your old decorations on that tree. If your collection of old ornaments isn’t very big, a small tabletop tree will probably be large enough, and these smaller trees can be lovely on an end table or buffet, in a foyer, or on a countertop in a guest bathroom.
Old ornaments also make a nice display in a lighted curio cabinet. Try accenting the display with old photos of your family around the tree when it was decorated with those ornaments. Old ornaments can also be very carefully placed down inside a large clear glass vase, bowl, or hurricane lamp. This is a beautiful way to display your ornaments, while still keeping them safe. You can then use the vase or bowl as a centerpiece on your holiday table.
Be sure to choose a good, safe method of storage for your old ornaments. When packed away, you don’t want them touching one another, because they may get scratched or broken. Also be sure to pack them toward the top of your boxes. Remember, the more you have to dig for something, the more likely it is to get broken.
So next time you’re cleaning out your holiday decorations, don’t throw out old ornaments simply because you’re tired of them. There are many new and fresh ways to display old items. With a little time and creative thinking, you too can come up with a unique new way to display your old memories.

Tired of endless mall walking in search of a perfect Christmas gift that is nowhere to be found? Hate giving gift cards or gift certificates and cash just because it seems impossible to come up with anything better?
This holiday season, find unique ways to let the people in your life know that you care. Get creative, get personal and get fun; get a gift that will bring joy to her or him you love this Christmas.
Projects to Do and Make
Instead of toys that quickly lose their appeal, projects to make and do entertain during the process of creation and then become all the more special because they were made by the recipient. A craft set for making beaded jewelry, a T-shirt or canvas bag and special fabric crayons and pens for decorating, or a small set of wood working tools and pieces of cut wood can provide hours of entertainment. These gifts also often teach useful skills and encourage artistic abilities. Some kits can be purchased with the supplies and tools included. For a more personalized gift or to monitor the quality of the tools included a gift giver might choose the supplies and tools and pick a useful bag or box that could serve as storage later.
Homemade Items that Everyone Needs
Sometimes a gift item of a usable, consumable product with a personalized touch can be both affordable and appreciated. Children’s artwork can be scanned and made into calendars or greeting cards. Lip balm, bath salts, or bath oil can be made with items from the grocery and craft store. For kids simple recipes abound for play dough, homemade bath crayons, and homemade sidewalk chalk.
Since everyone needs to eat, ready-to-make meal mixes such as soup in a jar or muffin and bread mix can be great gifts as well. The gift of something useful need not be boring. It can be a playful twist on the usual or something a bit more extravagant than expected. But the element of usefulness ensures the gift will be appreciated rather than stored away.
Gift Tickets to Local Attractions, Museums or Performances
Gifts of tickets to local attractions, museums, or performances can encourage the appreciation of the arts. Families might appreciate an annual pass to a zoo or Children’s Museum near their home. Some performing arts centers offer packets of tickets to various events. Concerts or even movie theater tickets can be great gifts especially as families cut back on the entertainment budget and such attractions become a rare treat.
Instead of focusing on things to purchase, gifts that focus on activities can bring smiles and avoid both the shopping pitfalls and the return lines.Gifts that interest and give fun to the recipient need not be expensive or even purchased. With some planning and creative ideas, thought, smart gift givers can get through Christmas with some money left in their pocket.

Christmas Shopping Ideas That Count

I’d really like to make Christmas count this year. So I’m doing my Christmas shopping a little differently.
ONLINE – For all of the years that I’ve had an online business, I’ve never done my Christmas shopping online.
I picked my father in laws name for Christmas, he is an avid golfer so I went online to find something great for golfing instead of the usual (and useless) golf stuff. I found this set of “Birdie Balls” that are great to practice with at home. I’m sure he’s going to really enjoy it. I thought it was such a great idea that I got one for my son who also likes golf and gets bored around the house (when he’s home!) and also a set for my nephews.
Something useful – entertaining and something to get them out of the house – and it took me about 20 minutes while I was having my morning tea.
CANADA: http://www.albatrossgolfsupply.com
US – Birdie Ball Website with lots of stuff and gold tips: http://www.birdieball.com
MAKE IT YOURSELF – Do something a little different and make some natural skincare items for your family. My work at home business is selling ingredients – it’s easy and fun. A lot of women do it, and sell their items to make some Christmas cash, or bump up their earnings through out the year. Makes a great gift for the “crafty” person you know.http://www.handmadesoap.ca
WHAM PRODUCTS – The first thought that came to my mind was that in supporting other WHAM’s we will help give every body a nice Christmas, and we will, but maybe the best thing is the feeling of accomplishment we will be giving the mom’s who work so hard on their business so that they can be home, and boosting their rate of success.
Here is one website that lists WHAM sites http://www.wahmtalkradio.com/christmas-gifts/
Within a day or two I hope to have some handmade natural skin care sites listed on my blog at
http://time-management-at-home.blogspot.com Meantime pop in anyway!
CRAFT SALES – You can get some amazing bargains and some really unique stuff. It’s fun and a nice chance to see some friends in your local community. Even better than that, you are making a real difference to the ladies and gentlemen who are selling at the craft sales. I know from experience that these people work extremely hard, for some of them, this is their “big thing” for the year and every sale means a lot to them. (I went to one yesterday, got some amazing things at amazing prices, had a great time with my daughter (we made it a date and went out for breakfast first) and felt really good for supporting the local people who work so hard to get it ready)
SCHOOL BAZAAR – Why not support your community schools and get something different? Donations are always welcome as well. I usually donate soap and there is no better feeling than hearing from a mom who got some of my soap for Christmas from her child – and they go like hotcakes. Think tinsel when decorating, the kids love them! Also, consider volunteering to help out, it is a hoot to watch the kids do their Christmas shopping.
GIFT A STRANGER – For years I wanted to do something for people who don’t have much but had no idea what to do. Now there are some great online opportunities to do just that. There is a program called Embrace-a-Family that looks amazing, I will be donating to it and I hope that you can do the same. We also as a family – my inlaws, myself and each of my kids contributed to this one as well – giving to those in need is one of the best feelings that you can give to your kids.
http://www.ccfcanada.ca/managed/Default.aspx
I’ve been contributing to this charity monthly for about 10 years and have really enjoyed it. Right now we have a little girl who is my daughter’s age and even looks a bit like her, so it is really fun.
TIRES – Sounds odd but I have never forgotten a TV special about winter tires and a mother who’s daughter was killed because her car slid backwards off a hill and over a cliff, the consensus was that if she had proper tires it wouldn’t have happened. Do you have kids who drive their own cars? At home or moved out. Driving your grandkids around? Splurge and take their car in for a new set. I know I won’t drive without decent tires anymore. A few close calls with proper tires is bad enough!
ECO SHOPPING
There are countless environmentally friendly choices that you can make this year, the good news is that most of them seem to be healthy choices as well.
But remember when you are shopping to bring a bag or a tote instead of getting overdone with plastic bags this year.
My personal pet peeve is plastic bags. I ask for paper at the grocery store, we are lucky to have the choice. I use the bags to wrap boxes that I ship so they do double duty. If I didn’t, I would either be bringing my own reusable, or I would be getting some of those nifty plastic boxes that many grocery stores sell. Or you can buy some totes especially for that. I love the idea because you can keep them in your van or trunk, they can be useful for a variety of things and to keep your vehicle clean and organized. And you can use the lids to keep your groceries cold and dust free.
A great idea all around! The Green Guide blog has an article on it below.

KEEP THEM MOVING
Anything to keep your kids active is great.
We where lucky to get a second hand snowboard in kid’s size for my 9 year old daughter. My 16 year old son is an avid snowboarder and amazingly enough, they like to go out on our hill together. So now she will have her own “real snowboard” and she won’t care one bit that it is used. I am happy that she will be out in the fresh air having fun with her brother, getting some great exercise and getting another skill under her belt.
I haven’t personally seen them, but I think that they have video games out now that you use your whole body to do the moves, I think that would be great fun.
TIME
Take your kids out for a fun activity, maybe something you don’t normally do – bowling, cross country skiing, skating are a few fun things that are relatively inexpensive. Have a Blast and make some Christmas memories and traditions.
MOST OF ALL
Take the time to remember the people you love this Christmas, and who love you. Sometimes a phone call is priceless (not to be a bummer, but the person you are calling won’t always be here to answer the phone, do it while you can and make a memory)
HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A MOST EXCELLENT NEW YEAR!
Great Ideas for Christmas Costumes and Holiday Party Outfits

Christmas costumes are here and it is that time of year again to get excited and be ready for trips to the malls, the office parties, and being the host of one at your house. The parties start the day after Thanksgiving and go until the new year.
Here are some ideas on wonderful costumes you can wear for all these occasions?
The most famous costumes is Santa Clause of course. To get the jolly suit plan ahead and order online, or you can rent it at a costume store. They will have everything you need to make you look just like the ho, ho, ho, man himself.
Just know that with the Santa suit if you start looking before Halloween you will be able to find it. But if you decide to do this at last minute you can always look at the stores where they sell Christmas lights and other holiday products.
Santa always needs a helper to hand out that wonderful candy cane after the children see the big guy. The elf is the second best person in the holiday season. They are helpful and funny, and always lets the kids see Santa.
There are green outfits and big shoes help topped with a little green hat. And of course you have to paint a little red on your cheeks to make you look happy as you can be. Green tights help top off the ensemble.
Who gets Santa and the elves to the mall? It is the famous reindeer! They do have these costumes available at the costume store. If you are good at sewing you just need fur brown cloth and a big red nose for the most famous of them all.
Mrs. Claus is the right hand lady that keeps everything running smoothing. You need a red dress that goes down to the ankles, a white lace apron, and a old fashion hat that looks like the pioneers wore to bed at night. You always want to put a little red circle on each cheek to make her look rosy.
Angels are very easy costumes to make. Get a white gown, put a gold wrap around your waist, a beautiful gold halo on the top of your head, and some very nice wings on your back.
Frosty the snowman is always nice to sing with in the snow. He would be easy to find on the internet. Frosty would be good to have at an office party, or at a party you are going to have for children. They would love to have him. Just make sure he has a big black top hat with a flower on it. Add a pipe and you are set.
The Grinch that stole Christmas is always a great costume for office parties, kids parties, or when you have one at your house. If you host one just remember that he is green with fur all over, and he is mean at first. When he is nice you can put a huge heart on his chest to say I am nice and I love Christmas.
Churches always have the kids do events with the nativity. Characters include The famous Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus, You also have the angels who float around, and the wise men that have important parts in these scenes. With the animals you have camels, goats, horses, lambs.
When making the nativity costumes they are usually made by hand by the church kids. This let’s them take pride in what they did by themselves.
Christmas costume theme parties are very popular now. You just host a party and have every one dress in there character they love the most and have a wonderful themed party. Dressing up is not just for Halloween and for kids any more.
Remember the Christmas season is to have fun and being at a theme party where every one wears a Christmas costume will be festive and will remembered for a long time.

Apricot Fruitcake Recipe
4 eggs
1 lb candied mixed fruit
1 cup dried apricots
1/2 cup apricot nectar
1 cup water
1 cup white sugar
3/4 cup butter
1 cup golden raisins
1 pound red and green candied cherries
6 candied pineapple slices
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped pecans
Stage 1
First keep two 9 inch tube pans greased or buttered. Next, preheat the oven to 275 degrees F (135 degrees C). Cook apricots in water over medium heat until they are a little pulpy. Add the candied cherries, raisins, candied pineapple, and mixed dried fruits in a bowl, that is coated with one cup of the flour. Put the flour, baking soda, and salt into this. Add this flour mixture alternately to the earlier mixture of stage 1 along with the apricot juice. Meld this batter into the mixed fruits. Add the chopped pecans or walnuts and fold in the beaten egg whites. Turn the batter into the greased or buttered pans.
