Christmas Ornaments: New Ideas for Old Decorations

Most families have a collection of Christmas ornaments they display on their tree year after year. Often times, these ornaments are full of sentimental value. However, when you’ve been using the same ornaments for many years, they can also get a little boring. The important thing to remember is, you don’t have to part with your old ornaments in order to freshen up your tree. Hang onto those treasured items and find a new way to display them.
When getting ready to clean out an old collection of Christmas ornaments, the first step is to weed out any items that are worn or broken. Some things you may be able to repair easily, while others will need to be thrown away for safety reasons. Next, go through the remaining ornaments and decide what you want to keep. If there are ornaments you don’t want to keep, but also don’t want to donate to charity, consider handing them down to another family member. The gift of an old heirloom ornament might mean a lot to someone else in the family.
Now that you’ve got your old Christmas ornaments cleaned out and you’ve decided what to keep, the next step is figuring out how to display them. If you still want to display them on the main Christmas tree in your house, then consider ways to freshen up the look of your tree. If you currently use an artificial tree, you might want to consider getting a live Christmas tree this year, or perhaps just purchasing a new artificial one in a different size or color. Adding a new set of ornaments in coordinating (or differing) colors will spruce up the look of the tree. You might also consider new lights. For example, if you’ve always used multi-colored lights in the past, try using plain white. You’ll probably find that your holiday ornaments stand out a lot more. You could also add some other types of decorations to your tree to make it feel new again. Consider adding strings of beads, tinsel, feathers, floral accents…the sky’s the limit! For a really unique and whimsical tree, you can add almost any item and it will simply add character to the tree and make it more interesting.
In some cases, you may not want to put your old ornaments back on your main Christmas tree. After all, you’ve been using them there for years, so why not come up with a totally new way to display them? One option is to purchase another, smaller tree that you set up in another part of the house, and use only your old decorations on that tree. If your collection of old ornaments isn’t very big, a small tabletop tree will probably be large enough, and these smaller trees can be lovely on an end table or buffet, in a foyer, or on a countertop in a guest bathroom.
Old ornaments also make a nice display in a lighted curio cabinet. Try accenting the display with old photos of your family around the tree when it was decorated with those ornaments. Old ornaments can also be very carefully placed down inside a large clear glass vase, bowl, or hurricane lamp. This is a beautiful way to display your ornaments, while still keeping them safe. You can then use the vase or bowl as a centerpiece on your holiday table.
Be sure to choose a good, safe method of storage for your old ornaments. When packed away, you don’t want them touching one another, because they may get scratched or broken. Also be sure to pack them toward the top of your boxes. Remember, the more you have to dig for something, the more likely it is to get broken.
So next time you’re cleaning out your holiday decorations, don’t throw out old ornaments simply because you’re tired of them. There are many new and fresh ways to display old items. With a little time and creative thinking, you too can come up with a unique new way to display your old memories.

Where To Find Christmas Decorations And Ornaments

Are you looking for the best Christmas decoration and ornaments? There are a lot of stores everywhere. If you take a look through your local mall, you’re likely to find a huge selection of decorations to suit just about any taste and budget.
The perfect time to shop for decorations is the start of December. During this season, some shops and stores offer great discounts. Sometimes, you need to buy the tree first, and after displaying it in your home for a few days, you’ll come up with imaginative ideas on how to decorate it.
When it comes to ornaments, the best thing to do is to choose the color of your decorations to compliment the tree itself, or the color of the room where the tree will be placed. Usually, during the holidays, there are specialty stores in the mall, or special departments set up at regular stores that display a wide range of ornaments with unique colors and designs.
Christmas decorations can also be bought in souvenir shops you find while on vacation. These ornaments are often hand or natively made out of native materials too. Usually, these decorations are unique, but they can be a little expensive. If you want to buy cheaper decorations, you can find them in smaller stores away from the malls. You might have to search a bit, but what you find will be worth it.
You can also look for decorations in printed brochures and catalogs. These usually have a way of appearing in the mail just before the holiday season. Here you’ll find all the details, the sizes, colors available and the prices. Often there are discounts for buying more than one ornament. This can be a great way to decorate your tree for the holidays.
If you are comfortable shopping online, you can check websites that offer Christmas decorations. Use a search engine, and enter “Christmas ornaments” and you’ll find lots of places to shop. Many of these sites offer discounts for easy shopping.
If you’re going to buy Christmas lights, make sure that you buy them from a good store. Quality is important to consider in choosing lights – you want them to last more than one season. By choosing a good quality light, you won’t have to buy a new set each year, and more importantly, you’ll protect your home and family from the faulty wiring of cheaper lights that can be a fire hazard.
When the holidays are over, be sure to sort and store your decorations carefully. Try to keep the boxes or cartons they came in, so that they can be put away safely, without worrying about breakage during the year. This way, you’ll have the same wonderful, beautiful ornaments ready to use next year and for years to come.
Christmas Cupcake Decorations

Everyone loves Christmas and you’ll probably agree that decorations are a major part of the holiday. And what would Christmas be without all the baked goodies and sweet treats? As for me and my family, this involves cupcake decorations. The inclination to over-indulge in such sweets is more common around the holidays. So, I sincerely hope you’ll enjoy these artistic and quirky Christmas cupcake ideas – crafting as well as eating them.
Begin with your favorite cupcake recipe by baking them or buying a ready-made one from your favorite bakeshop. Generously top them with white frosting, add some shredded coconut, dust it with a powdered or confectioner’s sugar and voila! a mini-winter-wonderland in a yummy cup.
These are great for parties all year-round and particularly at Christmas time. The idea is to form a miniature Christmas present at the top each cupcake. Use an assortment of icing colors; red licorice works well for the ribbons and bows. Pitch in a small amount of sprinkles, if preferred.
Santa’s face never look so yummy! Top each of your favorite cupcakes with a red frosting on one side and white on the other. Put some mini marshmallows at the border separating the two colors, forming it as Santa’s hat brim. Cautiously use brown chocolate or green frosting to form his face on the white side of the icing. You may use, round candies for Santa’s eyes and nose. Thin out strips of various edible goodies such as fruit roll-up cutouts, and thin licorice whips, to use as Santa’s smiling lips.
These snowman cupcakes are definitely going to be a hit. White icing should be placed to form the base making it look like a snow on the ground. Put a big marshmallow, and then add a little one above to shape the body of Frosty the Snowman. Insert a toothpick vertically through both marshmallows to hold Frosty together. Use small candies of your choice for her eyes, nose, held in place with a small bit of frosting. Try on a small piece of Tootsie Roll for his hat. Frosty won’t likely melt … but I’m sure she won’t last long, either!
For this next one, we will try to make a Christmas tree made of cupcakes. You’ll need about one and half dozen cupcakes, and a rightfully big, festive platter to hold them all. Top all, except the last four, of your cupcakes with a green icing. The last four should be frosted in brown chocolate. Basically arrange the four brown-topped cakes at one end of the plate, shaping a tree trunk. Arrange your green cupcakes above the brown ones, in a shape of a triangle forming the shape of a tree. As for the decorations, use small chocolates candies of different shapes and colors. As usual, you can’t go wrong using grated coconut as snow, and red licorice makes a great garland. Try on some tubes of gel icing, in an assortment of colors, which can be bought at any supermarkets, party supplies stores, and baking supplies stores.
I am hopeful that these will inspire you to come up with your own fantastic, artistic, and one of a kind creations!

Mistletoe has been used to decorate homes during Christmas for many, many years. There has been a long held tradition of kissing underneath mistletoe hanging from a door frame. Making your own mistletoe creation is simple and inexpensive, so get ready for the holidays by making an easy mistletoe kissing ball.
You can easily and cheaply create your own mistletoe kissing balls with only a few items which can be easily purchased at almost any craft store. The items you will need for your creation are:
mistletoe
floral foam ball
floral wire
ribbon
Optional items you could also use are:
berries
additional greenery such as fir
Christmas themed cut outs
Gather the mistletoe, berries and other greenery and wrap the ends with floral wire. Stick the pieces wrapped in floral wire into the foam ball, arranging the pieces according to your preference. Add Christmas themed cut outs, if desired. Attach a loop of floral wire into the top of the ball and thread a piece of ribbon through the loop to hang the completed ball.
You can make your mistletoe kissing ball in any size you choose. Also, you can get really creative and add any other objects you think will look pleasing. Each one you make will be your own unique design. This craft can bee a good project for children with adult supervision.
Younger children would need an adult to assist with wrapping the pieces with floral wire. Most children would be able to complete the rest of the project with minimal assistance.
Because these decorations are so easy and inexpensive to make, you will be able to fill many doorways in your home and give a few away as gifts too. Try making your own mistletoe ball to easily and cheaply decorate your home for the holidays.

Oh no! I hear you cry! Not already, surely?
Sorry! But I did see my first chocolate Santa in the shops today (hiding sheepishly behind the chocolate pumpkins!) and I remembered how all the advance preparation I did last year left me more time than I dreamed possible for playing with the children and indulging my taste for champagne cocktails on Christmas Day. In fact, my freezer and I will become extremely intimate in the next couple of weeks as I start to put together all the Christmas food my family expects to have and squirrel it away until needed.
One splendid timesaver I’ll share with you is to prepare your roast potatoes whenever you get a spare half hour between now and the big day. No, I haven’t completely lost the plot, even though Christmas preparations have been known to have that effect. Just peel them, cut them, parboil them, cool them down under running cold water, allow them to dry off then whack them in a bag in the freezer and forget about them. On the day, just tip them, separated but still frozen, into your hot cooking fat and stick in the oven for an hour or so. Perfect. Do the same with the parsnips too.
I digress. The point of all this is to urge you to take the same approach to your Christmas decorations.
Shop bought decorations can be just fine but……wouldn’t it be fabulous if you could say “(the children and) I made them!” when visitors gasp in awe at your creations? Why decorate your place with the same Christmas decorations that everyone else has when with a little forward planning you can create something unique? Making Christmas decorations doesn’t have to be complicated or even madly time consuming – especially if you get cracking now and you have a guide to start you off.
Once you have made, say, a glorious Christmas wreath you have the skills to experiment and design your own.
Christmas Crafts is an eBook that takes you step-by-step through making a range of decorations from the wreath to candy canes, with comprehensive instructions and lists of materials needed. I discovered it last year and the children and I spent some happy – and sometimes highly comical – evenings as the nights drew in making boxes full of Christmas decorations. It became a real family affair and, in spite of the fact that we have more than enough now, I’m being pestered to get the materials ready again!
And I shall. We can always give the surplus away as gifts!

Do you love Christmas decorations? Then don’t leave any area undecorated. Get ideas for Christmas decorating every area of your home, inside and out!
If you’re like most people, you don’t have much time left at the end of a busy day to do anything extra. But at this time of year, you want to do something to make your home look festive and special and create the wonderful Christmas holiday atmosphere.
You’ll find some ideas here for quick and simple ways to add a festive look to your home without spending a lot of time or money. And you’ll have time left over to really enjoy Christmas!
1st. Decorate Everything with Ribbons & Bows
Bows look festive and the ribbons you choose should tie together with the rest of your decorating. Choose ribbons in colors and patterns that coordinate with your decorating scheme.
Tie generous ribbons to chair backs, candlesticks, picks in plants, wreaths, garlands, basket handles, drapery tie-backs, stair railings, and doorknobs.
You don’t have to stick with red and green. Choose plaids or florals that tie in. If you can’t find anything that looks quite right, then choose metallic silver, gold, green, or red.
Choose a ribbon that you can untie and re-tie each year. This will save money in the long run, and you’ll end up with a good collection.
When the holidays are over, untie the ribbons and press them lightly. The bows won’t get crushed and the ribbons will be ready when you want to take them out the next year.
2nd. Turn Off Lamps
Arrange lots of candles on the dining table and dine by candlelight, even if you’re just having leftovers. Every meal will feel special.
Burn a fire in the fireplace each evening and encourage family members to gather around and read, do homework, write Christmas cards, or snooze.
Arrange pillar candles in your bathroom, on the sink or around the tub. Take time to soak and enjoy! If you have little children in your home, you should be very careful with candles around the house. Always have an adult in the room.
3rd. Put Wreathes or Swags on Every Doors
Put a wreath or swag on every door you have. Of course, start with the front door to welcome guests.
Go on to the back door, inside and out. Remember over the mantle, and in all your front windows. Don’t forget bedroom doors, inside and out.
Use real pine, holly, or grapevine, decorated with bows, berries, fruit, pinecones, raffia, ornaments, birds, photos, or candy.
4th. Use Holiday Tableware for Every Meal in December
Look through your cupboards and get out any dishes that look festive.
Discount stores often carry seconds of name brand porcelain, as well as fun designs that are not so common.
Start a set of holiday dishes with dinner plates that coordinate with your everyday dishes. Add new pieces each year, like salad plates and mugs.
Note: Be sure the pattern you select will be continued from year to year.
Buy 1 or 2 place settings each year. Before long, you’ll be able to serve a feast.
If you’re adventuresome, choose a different pattern and one place setting each year. Arrange the different dishes around the table and get lots of comments and rekindle memories. When they’re not in use, the dishes can be displayed around the room.
To keep wreaths year after year, buy artificial wreaths that will last. Remember, you’ll need room to store them!
When Christmas is over and it’s time to get back to basics, you might find these organization and storage tips helpful. Get your ornaments, wreaths, garlands, and other decorations organized for next year.
Other common Christmas decorations include plants such as mistletoe, holly, and poinsettias. Although church and state have been separated, many cities still sponsor secular decorations in their downtown areas such as banners and Christmas trees.
I’m a Chinese girl, I love all beautiful, fashion and artistic things, and I’d like to introduce and display an excellent selection of China fine art, handicrafts, jewelry, toys, home decorations, gifts and fashion accessories to you, also give you great suggestions about gift ideas and introduce you the latest fashion trends in China.

People in different parts of the world wait eagerly for Christmas and the preparations that go along with this special occasion. Christmas brings joy and happiness to all. You might be surprised to learn that in some homes, Christmas decorations stay up year-round to be a reminder of the festive spirit of Christmas all through the year.
In some countries the decorations for Christmas start being put up long before December and continue until well into the New Year. Every home is decorated delightfully for Christmas and this festive look is an essential part of the Christian tradition.
Preparations for Christmas are done mainly during the month of December. This task may make the month a bit stressful as so many activities are to be done during this time but people happily take this in their stride. Everyone is in a holiday mood and wants their home to look its best and communicate the festive spirit to others. Here are a few suggestions to easily give your home a stunning look and still allow you to save some time for the festivities during Christmas time.
Bows can create a magical atmosphere. Bunches of brightly colored bows brings merriment at any time, but especially at Christmas. Tie bows and ribbons wherever you like – stair railings, the back of chairs, around candlesticks – be creative! You can use the same traditional colors of green and red but try to harmonize the color scheme with the interior design of your home. It will look a bit boring if you only use the usual Christmas colors of red and green. Floral and checkered designs will add some spice to your decorations. A particularly elegant touch is to combine metallic colors like silver and gold with your color choices.
You can decorate railings, armoires, mirrors and the mantle with garlands of ribbons and bows. Buy good quality ribbons and bows so they last through several holiday seasons. Be sure to pack them up along with your other decorations and keep them for the next year.
Now it is the most exciting part for everyone – decorating the Christmas tree. First put the strings of lights on the tree. Then hang your ornaments on the tree in such a way that they are lit properly so they look even more bright and sparkling. When Christmas lights reflect off all the Christmas decorations the tree looks absolutely enchanting!
Everything should be special for Christmas. During the Christmas dinner, spread tableware which is meant to be used for Christmas. You can collect these items from off-season sales. It’s not necessary that you have to buy everything at full price during Christmas. Collect your tableware bit by bit and by the end of the year you will be ready with a huge collection for Christmas festivities.
Christmas decorations are not quite complete without Christmas candles. Candlelight creates a romantic and peaceful atmosphere in your home. This is the time to dine in a candlelit room sitting beside the fireplace. Candles can make you feel the spirit of the holiday season and they will also add something extra special to your Christmas home d

Outside Christmas Decorations – How to Make a Christmas Light Show

The ultimate goal of anyone who loves to decorate their yard for Christmas is to set up a full light show that includes music. These shows can be difficult to set up, but they are spectacular to see and are well worth the effort.
Here are some steps to get your started on creating your own show:
Do your Research.
Before going any further, be aware that setting up a Christmas lightshow as part of your outside Christmas decorations take a lot of time and patience. It can be a great hobby, but it’s not as easy as plugging some lights in flipping a switch. So, if you are ready, keep reading.
You are going to need a few items to make this work:
1. A computer to do the programming.
2. A light controller with multiple channels. This is what controls the lights.
3. A software program to program the light controller. This will define when the lights turn on and off in relation to the music.
4. An FM transmitter to broadcast your music. Another option is a pair of speakers on your front porch, but it is unlikely that the neighbors appreciate the same song playing over and over again.
5. The lights! For a complete effect, this should include not just regular lights, but icicle lights, net lights and yard displays.
Organize and Plan.
Now you are getting down to the fun part. To make the show work, you will need to sit down with pencil and paper and design your system. Decide what music you want to play (preferably something that has to do with Christmas), and where the decorations will be. Your plan should include a drawing of your front yard, with sketches and notes on how the show will work.
Buy Your Equipment and Decorations
Now that you have your plan, you are ready to buy your decorations. This can get expensive fast, so do some research to make sure you aren’t overpaying. I suggest going through the internet for the software and control box for the lights. A search in Google or Yahoo should yield several results and allow you to compare several options.
Test, Test, and Test!
It’s important enough to say again: Test, Test, and Test! The first thing you should do is set up your controller for a single set of lights and make sure you can get it to turn on and off. Then get it to turn on and off to music. Then add a second set of lights and make sure you can get that one to turn on and off. See why this takes so long? It can be tedious, but the results are well worth it.
Set It All Up
After everything is programmed, it’s just a matter of setting it up. Hang the lights, set up the displays, and plug it in.
Now, all you have left to do is sip hot cocoa and watch your neighbors scramble to get their decorations looking half as good as yours!
Good Luck and Merry Christmas!
Fast and Easy – Organize Your Christmas Decorations and Put Them Away

Let’s start the New Year off right. Oops, we still have to take care of last year. This means those beautiful Christmas decorations that we know have to be put away, but we really aren’t ready to do it, are we? And what about our New Year’s resolutions? We want to start those, but maybe we should get that Christmas stuff put away first. We’re going to show you an fast and easy way to get this done.
So let’s begin with our first resolution, shall we? Do you search for that special ornament every year? We are going to take care of that problem so we can easily find everything next year. But next year seems so far away and we’ll get to those boxes before then and organize everything. So before we know it, we are putting everything in boxes, usually without labels, with the best of intentions to get it all organized before next Christmas.
We all know this isn’t going to happen. All we are doing is making next year’s decorating job more time consuming and much more difficult than it has to be.
To do it right, get yourself a few large boxes or large plastic storage bins with lids and some newspapers. Cushion the bottom of the box with crumpled up tissue paper, newspaper, or even recycle the wrapping paper that came off the gifts, if you still have it. Remove all heirloom or breakable ornaments from the tree and wrap them in tissue paper to protect them. Take more newspaper and make another layer and repeat the process. Label the box and you are done with the ornaments.
If you are save lights from year to year, here’s a great way to store them without having a tangle next year. Take those newspapers again and roll 5 or 6 pages up to form a tube. After carefully removing each string of lights from the tree, wrap each string around a tube, put the tubes in a box, label and you are finished with that chore.
For your artificial greenery around the house, first, get a box, (but you knew that, right?) roll up each piece or section, put it in a clear plastic bag and seal it with packing tape. You won’t need a lot of tape, just enough to label the bag. Repeat this until you have all the greenery packed away. Get more of those boxes, fill them with the wrapped greenery, label, and you guessed it, you’re done.
Now, if you have special dishes just for the holidays, cookie jars, candy dishes, etc., you will want to do the same thing. This time you want to be extra careful because most of these things will be breakable. Pretend you are moving, and wrap each item securely and pack it in a box with cushioning, filling any gaps with crumpled paper to keep everything safe until next Christmas.
Oh, did we forget about the tree? If it is an artificial tree, hopefully you have saved the box it came in when you bought it. If not, try to find a box it will fit in, pack it neatly in the box and label it. If you can’t locate a box, wrap it in plastic to protect it from dust. You can buy a large roll of painter’s plastic at any home improvement store for about $10 and you will have plenty left over for any future projects you may have.
Don’t you feel better? Just knowing that when it comes time for the holidays next year, you won’t have to search for anything. It will all be packed away and labeled neatly, just ready for you to open up and know exactly what’s in there. Merry Christmas 2009.
