How is the best way to cut a hole in a bottle for an electric cord?

My wife is a decorative arts painter and has been painting wine bottles as gifts to others. Recently she has been having me drill bottles, near the botom, and then puts in Christmas lights for effect. I used a glass bit, but I can only drill 2-3 bottles before I have to throw away the bit. Is there a better way?

As far as I know, a glass bit is the only way…maybe they make a more ‘industrial’ one? The only reason I wonder, as I work in glass on occason, and have used my grinder for years, never replacing the bit.

Perhaps you could look on web sites that have to do with glass blowing or under a craft website. Good luck:)
